During my recent workouts, I’ve been experiencing some pain below the knee, in the shin area. Are shin splints the cause of my lower leg pain?

Also called Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), shin splints are a common sports injury typically caused by the combination of too much, too soon. That’s why shin splints often plague beginner athletes who dive right into an intense workout regimen. Likewise, shin splints often occur in habitual athletes – especially runners – who suddenly amp up their workouts without giving their bodies proper time to adjust to the increased stress.

Usually shin splints afflict an athlete’s dominant leg, and can be felt in the outer or inner part of the lower leg area, presenting as a dull ache or throb. That being said, there are a variety of explanations for lower leg pain in the shin area, including a stress fracture. The best way to determine if shin splints are the cause of your shin pain is to visit an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of sport injuries in Southern California.
